STFC makes strategic investments to support world leading science and technology for the UK. These investments include large scientific facilities used across the research base. Our vision is to maximise the impact of our knowledge, skills, facilities and resources for the benefit of the United Kingdom and its people.

LIBRA

Laser Induced Beams of Radiation and their Applications

The LIBRA project is a four-year EPSRC Basic Technology-funded programme to develop high power laser-driven sources of protons, ions and gamma rays. The project involves a consortium of scientists and clinicians from eight UK institutions.

Central Laser Facility

The Central Laser Facility (CLF) was formerly part of the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC). As of the 1st April 2007 this has merged with the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) to become the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC). The CLF is a partnership between its staff and the large number of members of UK and European universities who use the specialised laser equipment provided to carry out a broad range of experiments in physics, chemistry and biology.

HiPER

HiPER is a proposed European High Power laser Energy Research facility dedicated to demonstrating the feasibility of laser driven fusion as a future energy source. HiPER is being designed to enable a broad array of new science including extreme material studies, astrophysics in the laboratory, miniaturised particle accelerators and a wide range of fundamental physics research.
